Rabat – French aeronautic company Safran and Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) signed on Thursday a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation and partnership in aircraft engine maintenance.

Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou signed the partnership agreement with President of Safran Aircraft Engines Jean-Paul Alary, with the aim of continuing the growth of the current site Safran Aircraft Engine Services Morocco (SAESM), including an additional 2,000 square meters expansion for an investment of MAD 30 million ($2.94 million) .

With this budget, the two partners seek to enable an increase in the number of maintenance operations from 70 to 700 “shop visits” per year by 2026 in addition to the creation of 100 jobs.

Royal Air Maroc CEO stressed the importance of the partnership, describing it as the “beginning” of a new phase in RAM’s partnership with Safran.

“Royal Air Maroc is proud to work with Safran to develop Morocco’s aviation sector and enhance our country’s position in the global aerospace industry,” Addou said.

Jean Paul Alary also commented on the signing of the partnership, saying that Safran is delighted to be boosting cooperation with RAM and harnessing the ecosystem of high level skills in Morocco.

“Since it was created 25 years ago, SAESM has become a reference in our global MRO network in terms of operational excellence, innovation and reduction of its carbon footprint,” Alary said.

In December last year, the Moroccan government signed an agreement with Safran to boost cooperation and advance the aerospace industrial ecosystem in the country.

The deal seeks to develop a high quality local supply chain by identifying and supporting the production capabilities of Safran’s suppliers and service providers in Morocco.

The agreement also aims to strengthen research and technology activities and enhance local skills and competencies through reinforcing training initiatives and establishing partnerships with engineering schools and universities.

Many reports stressed the importance of the aviation and aerospace sector in the North African country.

Last year, the US magazine Forbes described Morocco as Africa’s gateway to an aviation renaissance.

“From the edge of the Mediterranean, Morocco is forging an aviation path marked by impressive growth,” Forbes wrote in its latest report on Africa’s aviation industry.
