Rabat – President Emmanuel Macron presented Moroccan artist Mehdi Qotbi with the esteemed medal of Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit during a ceremony at the Elysée Palace on Thursday evening.

The French president praised Mehdi Qotbi, who is known for his outstanding contributions to the arts and his role as president of the National foundation of Museums of Morocco (FNM), as an “exceptional artist” and a “builder of bridges between countries and people.”

Addressing Qotbi directly, President Macron lauded him as “one of the hunters of art and talent” and highlighted his continuous dedication to creating, exhibiting, and teaching plastic arts, as well as fostering connections with inspirational figures.

In response, Qotbi expressed his gratitude, acknowledging that the award extends beyond him to the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco. He credited “the wonderful teamwork” fostered under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, and the King’s “enlightened leadership” in promoting arts and culture.

Mehdi Qotbi was born in 1951 in Rabat.  His journey to artistic prominence was marked by perseverance and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Despite humble beginnings, he seized every opportunity to cultivate his talents and engage with diverse perspectives.

His longstanding commitment to the arts has garnered international recognition, including prestigious honors such as the Commander of the Hungarian Order of Merit, Commander of the Legion of Honor (France), and Officer of the Order of the Throne (Morocco).

Notably, Qotbi was initially honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honor by former French President Jacques Chirac in 2000, subsequently rising to the rank of Commander under President François Hollande in 2016.

Thursday’s ceremony, attended by high-profile dignitaries including French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and President of the Arab World Institute Jack Lang, underscored the enduring cultural exchange between Morocco and France facilitated by figures like Qotbi.
