Rabat – A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook residents across New York City, surrounding suburbs, and New Jersey, causing widespread concern and prompting swift response efforts.
Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York State, took to Twitter, stating, “My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”
The earthquake, which struck around 10:23 a.m. local time, prompted a flurry of social media activity with “#earthquake” swiftly becoming a trending topic across various platforms.
Contrary to the initial assessment, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the magnitude to 4.8. Although considered moderate, the tremor caused noticeable shaking from northern Virginia to as far north as New Hampshire, as per reports from the EMSC.
While the event sparked a brief alarm among residents, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has assured that there is no risk of a tsunami in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Despite this reassurance, the tremor served as a reminder of the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity.
Instances of social media users sharing their experiences of the quake flooded timelines, with many expressing surprise and curiosity about the phenomenon.
The incident highlights the role of social media as a platform for real-time reporting and community engagement during such events.
Authorities have yet to report any significant damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.
