Rabat – French Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Sejourne has emphasized the importance of cooperation with Morocco, describing diplomatic ties between the two countries as “unique.”
Sejourne’s remarks came following his bilateral talk with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, who visited the European country this week.
“The relationship between France and Morocco is unique,” Sejourne said on X, formerly Twitter, stressing that his recent visit to Rabat built momentum towards cooperation between the two countries.
“The momentum initiated by my recent visit to Morocco continues today with a working session with my counterpart,” Sejourne added.
The working session is part of the two countries’ commitment to move forward, closing an episode of tensions caused by what observers deemed France’s ambiguous position on Morocco’s diplomatic assertiveness, including on the Western Sahara dispute.
In February, Sejourne visited Morocco as part of the bilateral dialogue seeking to end this chapter of tensions.
During his visit, Sejourne stressed France’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara, adding that Paris has been one of the first countries to endorse the initiative and its viability to end the lingering territorial dispute.
To mitigate the crisis further, France expressed its intention to contribute to Morocco’s efforts to develop Morocco’s southern provinces.
French Delegate Minister for Foreign Trade Franck Riester visited Morocco earlier this month, where he announced that a subsidiary of the French Development Agency (FD) is interested in helping finance a high-voltage line between Dakhla and Casablanca.
He also reiterated France’s commitment to boosting ties with Morocco, adding that the economic and commercial dimension is “absolutely a key element in the strong friendship and partnership between Morocco and France.”
Expanding cooperation with Morocco to expand to various sectors is also one of the priorities for France, and the two countries are determined to overcome all challenges with actors that may hinder the growth of their bilateral economic ties.
