Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Albares has again emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties between Spain and Morocco, describing the improving relations as “beneficial” for both parties.
Albares made his remarks today before the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
“Our excellent relations with Morocco are beneficial for both countries,” Albares said, noting that cooperation between Rabat and Madrid covers a wide range of sectors, including the fight against terrorism and human trafficking.
Commenting on the ongoing evolution of bilateral trade, Albaes noted an increase in the number of Spanish companies established in Morocco.
He also recalled the “human ties” between the two countries, noting that Morocco is home to 14,000 Spanish nationals while more than a million Moroccans are said to reside in Spain.
Albares’s remarks come on the heels of a smear campaign by some Spanish political parties and media, using defamation to target the Moroccan community established in Spain.
Earlier this month, Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, commented on the campaign and slammed the media and Spanish political parties involved in the campaign.
The Moroccan community in Spain is integrated in Spain and Morocco is “very proud” of Moroccans living in the European country, the ambassador said.
Albares’ remarks also add to the Spanish government’s consistent reaffirmation of its readiness to cement improving relations with Morocco in all sectors
Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas renewed on Monday his country’s appreciation of ties between the two countries during the launch of the ongoing edition of the International Agricultural Exhibition (SIAM), where Spain is the guest of honor.
Earlier this month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also emphasized during the plenary session of the Lower House Congress the need to maintain solid ties between the two countries, describing cooperation with Morocco as “excellent.”
“We maintain excellent cooperation with Morocco, particularly in the fight against terrorism, illegal immigration, and the mafias involved in human trafficking,” Sanchez said.
