Rabat – Former U.S. international Jimmy Conrad has weighed in on the reaction surrounding Morocco’s World Cup victory over the Netherlands, questioning why much of the post-match discourse has focused on Dutch shortcomings rather than the Atlas Lions’ performance.
Speaking on CBS Sports following Morocco’s Round of 32 victory over the Netherlands, former U.S. defender Jimmy Conrad argued that the focus surrounding the match should be on Morocco’s performance rather than solely on what went wrong for the Oranje.
“It feels like we’re still talking about how the Netherlands failed as opposed to Morocco succeeding,” Conrad said after Morocco secured a 3-2 penalty shootout victory following a 1-1 draw in Monterrey.
His remarks came amid widespread debate over Ronald Koeman’s strange, panic-induced tactical decisions and the Dutch national team’s display following their elimination.
Several pundits and former players criticized Koeman’s approach after the defeat, including former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who said the Dutch coach “lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity.”

The reaction sparked broader discussions online, where many fans argued that Morocco’s performances continue to be framed primarily through the lens of European disappointment rather than African achievement.
Agreeing with this critique, Conrad pointed instead to Morocco’s tactical discipline, intensity, and execution throughout the game.
The Atlas Lions created some of the match’s clearest opportunities before Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute.
Morocco continues pushing forward and eventually equalized during stoppage time through defender Issa Diop before advancing on penalties.
Conrad also hailed Morocco’s coaching staff and squad depth, highlighting the bold substitutions made during the match and the confidence shown in younger players.
He noted that Morocco’s manager trusts a core group of 20 year olds, giving the Atlas Lions the depth necessary to sustain a deep tournament run.
The former U.S. international had also predicted the upset before kickoff during CBS’ World Cup coverage, backing Morocco to eliminate the Netherlands from the tournament.
Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 in Houston as the Atlas Lions eye another historic World Cup campaign following their semifinal run in Qatar.
