Rabat – BBC Eye recently released the documentary “Burning Sun: Exposing the Secret K-pop Chat Groups” on one of Korea’s most shocking scandals involving high-profile K-pop stars.
Premiering on YouTube, the documentary has garnered widespread attention and sparked intense reactions, particularly in Korea. It featured firsthand accounts and chilling footage of the events surrounding the Burning Sun nightclub scandal, which exposed a web of sexual exploitation, corruption, and police collusion.
The documentary followed the journey of two female journalists, Park Hyo-sil and Kang Kyung-yoon, who investigated the case and brought these crimes to light. Hyo-sil first reported on K-pop star Jung Joon-young’s secret filming of sexual encounters in 2016. Despite public backlash and personal suffering, including two miscarriages, Hyo-sil’s initial revelations paved the way for deeper investigations.
Meanwhile, Kyung-yoon later uncovered extensive evidence from Jung’s phone, which helped reveal the extent of the exploitation and implicated other stars like Seungri of the famous K-pop group BigBang, and musician and actor Choi Jong-hoon.
In particular, the documentary highlighted the challenges and dangers these journalists faced, including severe trolling and threats. However, their efforts led to significant public outrage and legal actions against the celebrities involved.

The background of the Burning Sun scandal dates back to November 2018 when MBC Newsdesk reported on an assault on a male clubgoer by a staff member. The victim alleged that he was trying to help a woman who was being sexually harassed but ended up being beaten by the club’s security.
The initial investigation into the assault quickly expanded, eventually revealing the nightclub’s involvement in prostitution, sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and police corruption. Located in Seoul, the club was a hotspot for the wealthy elite, celebrities, and influential figures.
Central to the scandal were the KakaoTalk group chats, where celebrities, including Seungri, Jung Joon-young, and Choi Jong-hoon, shared illegally filmed footage and discussed their criminal activities, including gang rapes. The group members shared videos of themselves engaging in sexual acts with unconscious women who were unaware they were being filmed.
Female victims reported being drugged and sexually assaulted at the club. The case highlighted the use of “date rape” drugs like GHB, which were allegedly used to incapacitate women before they were sexually assaulted.
The revelations led to criminal charges and convictions, though many criticized the sentences as excessively lenient given the severity of the crimes. Seungri received 18 months, and Choi Jong-hoon got two years, while some implicated police officials faced little to no consequences. Jung Joon-young, who was found to be a central figure in the dissemination of illegal footage, received a five-year sentence.
