The Moroccan embassy in Kenya issued a statement in response to a viral footage allegedly depicting Moroccan police officers engaging in brutality towards an African passenger at an airport.
The embassy vehemently rejected the authenticity of the video, clarifying that the footage was falsely attributed to Morocco and its police officers.
“The embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco would like to clarify that the events depicted in this video did not occur in Morocco, and the individuals portrayed are not affiliated with Moroccan police forces,” the embassy wrote on Tuesday.
It also urged the public and media outlets to verify sources and facts before disseminating such information.
The embassy’s statement came after the video of the reported incident went viral on social media, with many claiming that the brutality against the migrant was allegedly perpetrated in Morocco.
The video falsely attributed to Moroccan police horrific events that took place at a Tunisian airport in July 2022.
Notably, the footage documents a brutal attack by Tunisian security forces against sub-Saharan African passengers, who were beaten and assaulted by the police.
The video shows baton-wielding security services brutally attacking passengers even after they had fallen to the floor.
In recent years, Tunisia has on numerous occasions been at the center of controversy for episodes of violent crackdown on sub-Saharan migrants in the wake of President Kais Saied’s racist discourse on the presence of sub-Saharans on tunisian territory.
Tunisian authorities expelled last September hundreds of sub-Saharan African migrants from the port city of Sfax, worsening the plight of migrants in the North African country.
In February, President Saied sparked uproar with his racist claim that sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia are agents of some plot to erase Tunisia’s traditional tunisian and Muslim identity.
Increased sub-Saharan presence is the reason behind the recent spike in crime and violence in Tunisia, the Tunisian president notably argued, noting that “urgent measures” should be taken to stop them from entering the North African country.
