Rabat – A group of young Moroccans are reportedly being held captive by digital mafias operating along the border between Thailand and Myanmar.
According to converging media reports, the individuals have been coerced into laboring for cybercriminal syndicates engaged in criminal activities such as fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions and e-commerce scams.
According to a report from news website Euro Dayfr, the Moroccans have been subjected to abduction, torture, and exploitation at the hands of armed groups operating in the lawless border region in Southeast Asia.
The sister of one victim revealed the details of how her brother fell victim to the mafias. She disclosed how he was lured from his residence in Dubai, where he was working in an online business, with promises of lucrative opportunities awaiting him in Thailand.
Once in Southeast Asia, the victim was greeted with false hospitality and luxury accommodations.
He then found himself, along with a group of other Moroccans, forced to facilitate illicit activities at gunpoint. The sister further recounted that any attempt at escape resulted in the victims being subjected to torture.
The news comes weeks after British media the Daily Mail published a report on cyber slaves in South Asia.
The report featured the story of cousins from Pakistan who were trafficked by Chinese gangs and were forced to scam five people a day, mostly Americans, or they would be beaten and starved.
The two men were lured in with the promise of a job through social media that promised them good salaries and work environments. However, they found themselves trapped inside a Cambodian scam center that held more than 1,000 other people.
A report from the United Nations revealed that over 200,000 individuals are currently being forcibly detained, and forced to engage in romance-investment schemes and cryptocurrency fraud.
