Rabat – The Moroccan coastal city of Agadir is set to buzz with activity as it prepares to host the third edition of the International Argan Tree Fair, taking place from May 8 to 12.

Organized under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, this event goes beyond a simple exhibition; it’s a vibrant celebration of Morocco’s treasured argan tree and its deep-rooted connection to the country’s heritage, economy, and environment.

More than just a symbol, the argan tree is a pillar of local communities, particularly for women. The fair provides a platform for these communities to showcase their economic and social empowerment achieved through the argan oil industry.

The rich program offers a diverse range of activities catering to both industry professionals and the general public.

For professionals in the argan sector, the fair presents a valuable opportunity to forge new partnerships, strengthen existing networks, and explore avenues for growth.

The event fosters a collaborative environment where participants can exchange ideas, analyze market trends, and discuss the evolving regulatory landscape surrounding the argan tree ecosystem. Strategic discussions will pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the industry.

The fair doesn’t neglect the general public either. Visitors can delve into the fascinating world of the argan tree through a captivating program within the Agadir Medina.

A dedicated space will showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of women from the argan tree region, a testament to their preserved skills passed down through generations.

Children can embark on an educational journey designed to spark their curiosity about the argan tree and the importance of preserving this valuable heritage.

Cooperatives specializing in argan products will also be present, offering visitors a chance to discover the vast array of argan oil uses and the significant contributions of rural women in promoting these products.

An exhibition dedicated to the intangible heritage of the argan tree region will further enrich this diverse program.

The story behind the argan tree’s success is intrinsically linked to the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Areas and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA).

Established in 2010, this government body plays a crucial role in driving sustainable development across Morocco’s oasis and argan forests.

A cornerstone of ANDZOA’s strategy is the promotion of women-led cooperatives. This model fosters economic development while simultaneously empowering women and safeguarding the environment.

Through argan oil production and sales, these cooperatives provide a unique model for income generation, contributing to female emancipation and the preservation of the argan tree ecosystem.

ANDZOA’s dedication extends beyond the fair. Its commitment is evident in the impressive portfolio within the province of Tiznit, where the agency funded 171 development projects between 2012 and 2023, with a total value exceeding MAD 402 million ($42 million).

This focused approach has yielded significant results, with the poverty rate in the region dropping from 13.4% in 2007 to 6.01% in 2022.

The upcoming International Argan Tree Fair stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the argan tree and the unwavering commitment of institutions like ANDZOA.

By celebrating this natural treasure and empowering the communities that depend on it, Morocco is charting a path towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
