Rabat – The Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail is set to return for its next edition on June 1 and 2 in the picturesque Toubkal National Park, located in the Al Haouz province. The annual race aims to highlight community support and environmental stewardship through a series of impactful initiatives.
This event is “more than just a sporting competition; it embodies a commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly sports tourism in rural areas,” said the organizers in a press release.
The competition will feature over 700 professional and amateur runners from 15 different countries.
This year’s edition, held in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the Al Haouz region in September 2023, will be entirely dedicated to solidarity, added the statement.
The event’s initiatives will include an educational campaign conducted at a primary school in Ouirgane to promote the benefits of sports for young students.
In addition, a race will be organized for the benefit of 150 local children to encourage them to engage in physical activity and enjoy the spirit of the event.
Also on the event’s agenda is the drilling of a well in the region to address the local community’s need for clean drinking water.
In addition, a women’s cooperative in the village of Tekkent will receive assistance to help facilitate the production of traditional rugs and local products.
Through these initiatives, the event aims to support the local community who were severely affected by the earthquake which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and caused widespread destruction.
The statement added that the top male and female finishers in the HAUT 42 race will earn a coveted spot in the Sierre-Zinal race, with full support provided in partnership with the Swiss Embassy and Sierre-Zinal organizers.
