Rabat – Abdallah Lamane, a 24-year-old engineering student from Morocco, has recently secured a place at the prestigious Harvard University in Boston, USA.
With this achievement, he became the first Moroccan to be admitted to the highly esteemed “Health Sciences and Technologies” doctoral program, a joint initiative between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard Medical School.
Reflecting on his achievement, Lamane expressed both astonishment and a sense of responsibility. “I never imagined being able to go to Harvard. It’s a dream that inspires many,” Lamane said in an interview with state press agency MAP. “It is now my responsibility to proudly represent Moroccan excellence at this prestigious institution.”
Born into a modest family, with his father hailing from Casablanca and his mother from Marrakech, Lamane grew up in Chanteloup-les-Vignes, a suburb of Paris.
Despite the lack of social mobility, Lamane’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
He attended the esteemed Janson-de-Sailly preparatory school in Paris before pursuing his engineering studies at CentraleSupélec, one of France’s top engineering schools.
Throughout his educational journey, Lamane overcame numerous obstacles, crediting his success to the unwavering support, sacrifices, and motivation provided by his parents.
“The values instilled by my parents constantly inspired me to aim high, both in my studies and in my personal life,” he said. “Being accepted into the doctoral program at Harvard is the culmination of 24 years of education; it’s the cherry on top. It’s the best gift I could give my parents for all their sacrifices.”
The selection process for Harvard’s program, one of the oldest and most rigorous in biomedical engineering globally, is highly competitive.

Candidates from around the world vie for a spot, with Harvard seeking individuals who possess diverse backgrounds and a strong commitment to research. Lamane’s “excellent” academic record, “cultural diversity,” and “determination to succeed” distinguished him from the pool of applicants.
Lamane’s academic journey has also taken him to Stanford University, where he received a scholarship for an internship last year.
Following this six-month internship, he completed his gap year at Harvard University, working in one of the medical school’s hospitals. “I will return there in September for the joint thesis between Harvard and MIT in the field of artificial intelligence for medical imaging,” Lamane disclosed.
His doctoral thesis, expected to span four to five years, will delve into the utilization of AI in medical imaging. “The idea of my doctoral thesis is to deepen the subjects I have worked on, particularly the use of AI in medical imaging,” Lamane explained. “It involves helping radiologists and oncologists automate certain repetitive tasks using the latest AI models.”
Lamane’s innovative research aims to transform the medical field by improving the precision of tumor localization and enhancing the effectiveness of radiation treatments. “This allows for precise localization of tumors and targeted radiation for more effective treatment,” he further noted.
Excited about his future in Boston, Lamane said looks forward to joining the Moroccan community there and further strengthening the ties between American and Moroccan research.
He also expressed admiration for several Moroccan universities, particularly the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Benguerir.
“Today’s Morocco is rapidly evolving,” Lamane proudly stated, emphasizing his deep connection to his homeland. “Moroccan education and culture have been a fundamental pillar in my youth and continue to be so in my identity today.”
Lamane’s mother, Saida El Idrissi Daffali, expressed immense joy and pride in her son’s accomplishments. “We instilled in our children the love of the homeland and the ancestral values of our country,” she shared.
