Rabat – The banking group Societe Generale Maroc has announced the appointment of Mehdi Benbachir as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2024.

The decision was finalized during a meeting of the company’s Supervisory Board on May 23.

Benbachir brings a wealth of experience to his new role, the banking group said in a statement today. The new CEO has spent nearly two decades in the banking sector, with a notable focus on investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, as well as private equity.

He originally joined Societe Generale Maroc in 2005, starting out in the Large Corporates Division before rising through the ranks.

His career trajectory within the group has been impressive, the company’s statement noted. By 2008, Benbachir was heading the Advisory Division, where he played a pivotal role in advising corporate clients on complex financial transactions.

His strategic insights and leadership skills earned him successive promotions, culminating in his appointment as Deputy CEO in 2018, the company explained.

Over the years, Benbachir has demonstrated his capability in overseeing diverse aspects of banking operations.

In 2013, he assumed responsibility for all Investment Banking activities at Societe Generale Maroc, including advisory services, trading operations, securities management, and private equity investments.

His vision and operational acumen were further recognized in July 2020, when he took charge of the Retail Business Unit, overseeing markets catering to individual consumers, professional clients, and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

As CEO, Benbachir will now assume direct oversight of Societe Generale Maroc’s Regional Delegations, Retail Business Unit, SME Business Unit, and Marketing Department.

Societe Generale Maroc ranks 4th among Moroccan banks with approximately 400 branches and over 3,000 employees serving nearly 800,000 clients.

In 2017, SGSS Morocco was awarded the “Best Sub-Custodian of the Year” by Global Finance.
