Rabat – On Friday, Crocoparc Agadir will receive 16 specimens of crocodiles from the Aquarium Aquatis in Lausanne.
In a recent press release, Crocoparc highlighted its dedication to ensuring the well-being of the incoming crocodiles.
A specially designed space has been prepared to accommodate the reptiles during their acclimatization period, estimated to last a year.
Aquatis Aquarium stands as the sole entity outside Africa to successfully breed this particular species, underlining the importance of this collaboration.
Working hand in hand with local authorities, notably the National Agency for Water and Forests and wildlife conservation experts, Crocoparc Agadir states they are making efforts to ensure the success of this reintroduction initiative.
Drawing from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) innovative “One Plan Approach,” the park aims to set a new standard in species preservation.
The One Plan Approach (OPA), developed by IUCN and the Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG), is a method of managing species that creates a conservation plan by gathering input from all stakeholders involved with both species in their natural habitat and those in controlled environments like zoos.
This development follows a poignant moment in September 2022, when the Lyon Tête d’Or Zoo entrusted Crocoparc with a pair of suchus crocodiles, a species long extinct from the southern Moroccan “Gueltas” since the 1950s.
These crocodiles have smoothly adapted to their new habitat.
Crocoparc Agadir’s endeavor further underscores its commitment to nature conservation, promising a brighter future for endangered species worldwide.
Beyond its role as an animal park, Crocoparc Agadir has offered visitors a hub of cultural, scientific, artistic, and environmental activities since its inception.
The crocodile zoological park located in the town of Drarga just outside Agadir, first opened its doors to the public in May 2015.
