Rabat – The Moroccan national football team is set to take on the Republic of Congo tonight in their second appearance in this month’s international break.
This match is part of the fourth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and will be played at the Grand Agadir Stadium.
Coach Walid Regragui is expected to make several adjustments to the starting lineup after a number of key players picked up injuries in the Atlas Lions’ recent game against Zambia.
Captain Romain Saiss is anticipated to be one of these missing players, with many fearing that his absence could be a significant blow to Morocco’s defense.
In addition, there are uncertainties surrounding the participation of star midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who is also dealing with injury concerns. Ziyech’s status remains doubtful, and his presence in tonight’s starting lineup is not guaranteed.
Despite these setbacks, the Moroccan team is expected to field a strong lineup against Congo Brazzaville. The projected starting eleven includes the team’s star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
The line of defense features Nayef Aguerd, Achraf Dari, Achraf Hakimi, and Yahia Attiyat Allah.
Meanwhile, the midfield lineup includes Sofyan Amrabat, Hakim Ziyech, Azzedine Ounahi, and Elias Bensghir. Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi will play as forwards in the upcoming match.
Despite leading Group E with six points following two consecutive wins against Tanzania and Zambia, their performance has been largely underwhelming, leaving fans wanting more.
While they remain one of the favorites to qualify for the World Cup, the Atlas Lions’ premature departure from the 2023 AFCON in the Round of 16 is casting a shadow over their upcoming journey to the World Cup in the USA.
The 2023 AFCON has been especially disappointing for fans as it marked the first tournament since the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where the Atlas Lions’ awe-inspiring journey led them to the semi-final of the prestigious tournament.
