Rabat – The public prosecutor, operating within the Kenitra Court of Appeal, announced that they detained seven individuals and placed one under judicial supervision in the ongoing investigation of the Sidi Allal Tazi methanol poisonings.
In a statement to MAP, the King’s public prosecutor emphasized the urgent need for an investigation prompted by reports circulating on various digital platforms regarding the deaths linked to the consumption of the rigged alcohol.
The prosecution instructed the judicial police of the Royal Gendarmerie to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this case, under which eight individuals were referred to the public prosecutor’s office for questioning.
Findings from the conducted investigation revealed that the individuals ingested a methanol-contaminated ad hoc batch of Mahia, resulting in the death of some, and causing others to be sent to the hospital for ongoing medical care.
They also revealed that some of the suspects acquired this toxic alcoholic substance from concentrated alcohol vendors whom they delivered to certain traffickers. These traffickers, in turn, sold the lethal substance to attendees at a party.
According to official statements, a total of 114 cases of methanol poisoning were registered between Monday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 8 a.m. in Sidi Allal Tazi.
The prosecution filed a request for a thorough investigation into individuals suspected of deliberately supplying the toxic alcohol.
Following preliminary interrogation, the investigating judge ordered the detention of seven suspects under committal order, with another one under judicial supervision pending further investigation.
The public prosecutor’s office states that they remain committed to overseeing every aspect of the case, ensuring that due process is followed and that necessary measures are taken to uphold the rule of law.
