Rabat – Eight people have died due to methanol poisoning in the recent incident in the commune of Sidi Allal Tazi, located in the province of Kenitra, according to today’s reports from the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection of the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region.
The consumed poisoned alcohol, an ad hoc batch of Mahia, was suspected to have been tainted with large amounts of toxic methanol, leading to severe health complications and resulting in the deaths of eight individuals.
Seven of these deaths occurred at the El Idrissi provincial hospital in Kenitra, while another death was recorded at the Zoubeir Skirej hospital in Souk El Arbaa in the Gharb region.
According to official statements, a total of 114 cases of methanol poisoning were reported between Monday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 8 a.m. in Sidi Allal Tazi.
These cases were confirmed through laboratory tests conducted by the Moroccan Anti-Poison and Pharmacovigilance Center (CAPM) in Rabat.
Seven of these deaths occurred at the El Idrissi provincial hospital in Kenitra, while another death was recorded at the Zoubeir Skirej hospital in Souk El Arbaa in the Gharb region.
81 cases are under medical supervision in the region’s various hospitals. These include 28 cases at El Idrissi provincial hospital in Kenitra, three of whom are admitted to the intensive care unit.
40 cases have been admitted to the Moulay Youssef regional hospital in Rabat, with two individuals placed in the intensive care unit. 20 other cases are undergoing hemodialysis treatment at the CHU Ibn Sina in Rabat.
The Regional Directorate swiftly mobilized medical personnel, nurses, and necessary resources to provide care to the affected individuals.
38 patients left the hospital following an improvement in their health status, claimed the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection.
Close coordination has been established with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure an extensive response to this tragic crisis.
Efforts are underway to identify any additional cases that may have sought medical attention in healthcare facilities across the region.
The Regional Directorate urges citizens of the Kenitra province to report any similar cases and promptly seek medical assistance to avoid further health complications.
According to the directorate reports, all necessary measures have been taken to accommodate new cases and provide immediate medical attention, underscoring the importance of community vigilance and rapid response to prevent further tragedies.
