Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) called on Sunday for the responsible use of drinking water during Eid Al Adha celebrations, which will officially kick off on Monday.
ONEE said that this appeal comes as part of efforts to preserve water resources and to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water to the population, especially in anticipation of the Eid Al Adha celebration.
“Given the heatwave that Morocco is experiencing during the summer period, which coincides with Eid Al Adha, the demand for drinking water has significantly increased amidst the current situation characterized by a sharp decline in water resources due to low rainfall and successive years of drought in the Kingdom,” ONEE said in a press release.
The office recalled that the situation contributed to the reduction of dam reserves and the shrinking underground water reserves, a situation that requires a collective mobilization and a shared responsibility to rationalize the use of drinking water.
ONEE also recalled that it has acquired and distributed plastic bags to its subscribers for the collection of waste from the slaughter to avoid clogging the liquid sanitation networks.
It also emphasized that its teams have been working to ensure the supply of drinking water under the “best possible conditions.”
Morocco has been experiencing an alarming drought and lack of rainfall throughout the past five years.
To tackle the situation, the government frequently called on citizens to engage in initiatives and water rationalization campaigns.
The North African country has also turned to desalination plants to ensure the supply of drinking water across the country.
The latest initiative was launched on June 10, when Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan launched the construction of the Casablanca seawater desalination plant on Monday in the commune of Lamharza Essahel in the province of El Jadida.
The plant is projected to have an annual production capacity of 300 million cubic meters and serve an estimated population of 7.5 million inhabitants.
This project will require a total investment of MAD 6.5 billion ($652.2 million), mobilized through a public-private partnership.
