Rabat – Morocco and Gambia have taken a significant step towards bolstering cooperation on critical social issues, signing a new agreement to promote and protect the rights of women, children, and vulnerable populations.
The agreement, signed in Rabat on Tuesday, reflects a growing partnership between the two African nations.
Aawatif Hayar, Morocco’s Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, as well as Fatou Sanyang Kinteh, Gambia’s Minister of Women’s Affairs, Children, and Social Welfare, officiated at the ceremony.
This new framework aims to enhance training initiatives in the social action sector, fostering expertise exchange and collaborative programs. Minister Hayar highlighted Morocco’s strides in social welfare, particularly the professionalization of social work.
She emphasized that the agreement encompasses various programs targeting people with disabilities, the elderly, and children, with plans to be jointly implemented.
Economic empowerment of women emerged as a key focus area during discussions between the ministers. Hayar, in a press statement, noted that strengthening cooperation in this area was a central theme.
She also took the opportunity to showcase Morocco’s advancements under King Mohammed VI, particularly regarding women’s and children’s well-being, healthcare access, and social protection initiatives.
Gambian Minister Kinteh acknowledged the shared challenges faced by both countries concerning women, children, the elderly, and individuals with special needs. She expressed optimism about the agreement’s potential to spur joint initiatives tackling these issues.
Kinteh specifically underscored Gambia’s desire to learn from Morocco’s experience in promoting women’s and children’s rights, along with social integration strategies.
This agreement builds upon a foundation of growing collaboration. During Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara’s visit to Morocco in late May, he commended the strong ties between the nations.
He recognized Morocco’s significant support, led by King Mohammed VI, for the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit hosted by Gambia in May.
Tangara reaffirmed Gambia’s commitment to collaboration and shared aspirations for a unified and prosperous Africa. He also highlighted the importance of the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic, a Moroccan-led endeavor promoting regional stability and prosperity.
