Rabat – The regional Directorate of Health and Social protection in Beni Mellal-Khenifra has confirmed that the ongoing heatwave contributed to the deaths of vulnerable patients.
Following reports of sudden fatalities at the regional hospital, the directorate issued a press release on the preliminary conclusions of an investigation to ascertain the true causes of the deaths.
The directorate said that the regional hospital of Beni Mellal recorded 21 deaths, including four fatalities outside the hospital premises and 17 hospital deaths.
“The majority of the deceased suffered from chronic illnesses and were elderly, with a significant rise in temperatures contributing to their deteriorating health conditions and subsequent deaths.”
The directorate urged citizens in the region to exercise caution, avoid exposure to sunlight, especially during peak hours.
The statement comes in the wake of a nationwide outrage following reports of extreme heat-induced death of 20.
In response, the Ministry of Health pledged measures to address extreme heat-related health issues across Morocco.
“‘The Ministry of Health and Social Protection announces it has implemented a series of emergency measures to address the health effects resulting from the high heat wave currently affecting the country,” the ministry said today.
It further explained that regional health authorities have activated additional shifts in healthcare facilities across regions experiencing extremely high temperatures.
