Rabat – Two spectators were critically injured, and one was killed at Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, yesterday.
The Trump supporters were caught up in a shooting aimed at the former president and current Republican nominee.
The Washington Post reports that the FBI has already identified the suspected shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks was taken down and killed by security personnel following the shooting, which has been confirmed as an assassination attempt targeting Donald Trump.
The Post further quoted a US official speaking on the condition of anonymity, who confirmed that the shooter used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to carry out the attack.
President Joe Biden commented on the shooting, and Trump’s condition, noting that he is “grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well.”
“I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we wait for further information,” Biden wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Biden also expressed satisfaction with the security authorities for ensuring the safety of Trump.
“There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it,” he added.
Many have condemned the assassination attempt, including senators, who have described the situation as a “horrific act of political violence.”
“This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, also commented, stressing that he was horrified by the act.
Schumer said that the political violence “has no place in our country.”
