Rabat – A budget of approximately MAD 136 million ($13.8 million) has been allocated for a program to expand the city’s public surveillance network and improve traffic management.
The project is the result of a partnership agreement involving Tangier’s municipality, the Ministry of Interior, the Wilaya, the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN).
According to reports, the municipality of Tangier, which ratified the agreement in a recent session, noted that it has allocated a budget of MAD 54 million ($5.5 million) to contribute to the financing of this project.
The partnership agreement, effective immediately upon its signing by all parties, sets a comprehensive timeline for project completion, scheduled over a three-year period from its commencement.
Its primary objective is to install advanced surveillance systems in various public spaces across the city and upgrade traffic signals with the installation of new traffic lights.
These measures are designed to empower national security services in monitoring traffic flow, enforcing regulations, and guaranteeing public safety.
The agreement also aims to combat law infractions, protect both public and private properties, and organize parking arrangements for commercial transport vehicles.
At the beginning of 2024, at a cost of MAD 7.7 million ($783.7 million), a video surveillance system was deployed in the alleyways of Tangier’s old Medina and its surrounding perimeter to boost security and reduce vandalism and crime in the area.
In October 2023, as part of the same ongoing efforts to revitalize Tangier, a budget of approximately MAD 500 million ($ 50.9 million) was allocated for the upgrade and renovation program of the “Casabarata” flea market in the city from 2023 to 2028.
