Morocco’s Oriental Regional Council announced the election of Mohamed Bouarourou as its new president.
The Council’s members voted unanimously for Bouarourou of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), who was the sole candidate for the position.
Bouarourou succeeded Abdenbi Bioui, who is among the arrestees in the notorious Sahara Escobar case.
Police in December 2023 arrested Bioui, an influential PAM member.
Police also arrested Wydad President Said Naciri, another member of PAM along with a dozen other suspects for their alleged links to the notorious case.
The arrests came after drug lord El Hadj Ahmed ben Ibrahim known as the Desert Escobar accused the influential politicians of being involved in the case and of plotting against him as well as seizing his assets after his detention.
Both Naciri and Bioui pledged not guilty.
The case caused unprecedented political turmoil among PAM, which now announced a new regional council to take over Bioui’s position.
Bouarourou expressed his appreciation of the confidence shown in him during the vote and said he hoped to live up to the expectations of the region’s citizens.
He pledged to work with a wide range of actors across the region to create the best conditions for innovation.
The council, which consists of 51 members, including 20 women, also witnessed the election of seven vice presidents with 41 out of 44 votes.
