Rabat – In a recent press briefing, the United Nations has strongly condemned reports of severe mistreatment and torture of Palestinian prisoners by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged abuses since the conflict ignited on October 7.
The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, highlighted a particularly egregious case where Israeli forces tied a wounded Palestinian to a military vehicle during a raid in Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank.
“It’s absolutely nauseating to witness such totally unacceptable treatment,” Türk declared from Geneva. He emphasized the urgent need for a “transparent and independent investigation” to ensure accountability and justice for those responsible.
Türk’s spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, echoed this call, stressing that without accountability, such flagrant violations could continue unabated.
Israel has acknowledged that the “incident” in Jenin violated its military conduct code. However, Shamdasani criticized the broader context of “denigration and dehumanization” of Palestinians, which she argued perpetuates the abusive behavior by IOF troops.
The High Commission has been inundated with “very troubling and distressing reports” concerning the treatment of Palestinian detainees by IOF since the onset of the conflict.
These reports detail a range of abuses, including secret detention, torture, handcuffing, and deprivation of basic necessities such as food, water, and medicine.
Disturbingly, there are also allegations of sexual abuse against the detainees. “This is unacceptable and must stop,” Shamdasani asserted firmly.
This condemnation comes amidst escalating violence and humanitarian crises in Gaza, with the international community increasingly concerned about the treatment of civilians and prisoners.
