He added that the Moroccan coach would remain someone whose experience and advice would be valued by Jordanian football.
Sellami’s historic work with Jordan
Sellami took charge of Jordan after the departure of fellow Moroccan coach Hussein Ammouta in 2024.
His biggest achievement was guiding Jordan to the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.
Jordan secured qualification for the 2026 tournament after beating Oman 3-0, ending years of failed attempts to reach football’s biggest stage.
FIFA said Jordan had failed in nine previous attempts before finally qualifying under Sellami.
The achievement gave Jordan one of the biggest moments in its football history and confirmed Al Nashama’s progress in recent years.
Jordan finished second in its Asian qualifying group, behind South Korea and ahead of Iraq, Oman, Palestine and Kuwait.
Difficult World Cup debut
Jordan’s World Cup campaign ended in the group stage, but the team showed signs of progress during its first appearance at the tournament.
Al Nashama lost 3-1 to Austria in their opening match, then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Algeria before facing Argentina in their final group game.
Sellami said after the Algeria match that his players’ lack of experience cost them, but he remained proud of the way they competed.
Jordan later lost 3-1 to Argentina and finished the group stage without a point.
Despite the results, Sellami said the tournament gave his players valuable experience and that Jordan had scored in every match.
He also said the team had learned important lessons from facing higher-level opponents on the global stage.
Sellami now leaves Jordan after helping the country achieve its first World Cup qualification and leading the team through its debut campaign.
