Rabat – On the occasion of the Islamic Hijri New Year 1446 AH, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has extended heartfelt greetings to the leaders of various Islamic nations.
The gesture was made late Saturday evening as the monarch, known formally as Amir Al-Mouminine or Commander of the Faithful, sent personalized greeting cards to kings, presidents, and emirs across the Islamic world.
In the cards, King Mohammed VI conveyed his warm congratulations and best wishes for a blessed and prosperous new year.
He expressed his hope that the coming year would bring happiness and prosperity to the global Islamic community.
The announcement of the New Year celebration came on Saturday evening from the Islamic Affairs Ministry following the traditional crescent moon sighting conducted in the early hours this morning.
The ministry confirmed that the first day of Muharram, the inaugural month of the Islamic lunar calendar, will coincide with Sunday, July 7.
In their announcement, the ministry extended heartfelt good wishes and congratulations to the Moroccan people and the royal family on the occasion.
The Islamic New Year, known as Hijri, is named after the Arabic word for migration. The occasion refers to the Prophet Mohammed’s migration from Mecca to Medina, two holy Muslim cities in what is now Saudi Arabia.
The milestone event took place in 622 AD and marked the beginning of the Hijri or Islamic New Year as 1 AH (After Hijra). Sunday – Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic calendar – will mark the beginning of the year 1446 AH.
