Marrakech – In a pulsating Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Spain emerged victorious with a hard-fought 2-1 win over England. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal secured Spain’s fourth European Championship title, cementing their status as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
The match began with Spain asserting their dominance in possession, as the midfield duo of Rodri and Fabian Ruiz dictated play. However, it was England who nearly drew first blood when Phil Foden’s effort was well saved by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Spain broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half when 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, celebrating his birthday, played a perfectly weighted pass to Nico Williams, who calmly slotted the ball past Jordan Pickford to give Spain a 1-0 lead.
England refused to buckle under pressure and found an equalizer through substitute Cole Palmer in the 73rd minute. The Chelsea forward, introduced just minutes earlier, side-footed home from Bukayo Saka’s low cross to level the scores at 1-1.
With the match seemingly headed for extra time, Spain struck the decisive blow in the 86th minute. Jordi Alba’s pinpoint cross found Mikel Oyarzabal, who timed his run perfectly to slide the ball beyond Pickford and send the Spanish fans into raptures.
England fought valiantly in the closing stages but were unable to find a second equalizer, with Spain’s resolute defense holding firm. As the final whistle blew, Luis de la Fuente’s men celebrated a historic victory that saw them lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy for a record-extending fourth time.
Spain’s triumph was built on a foundation of youth and experience, with the likes of Yamal, Williams, and Dani Olmo complementing the seasoned Rodri, Alvaro Morata, and Jordi Alba. The Spanish team’s success also marked a fitting end to the international career of Jesus Navas, who confirmed his retirement after the final.
For England, the defeat will undoubtedly be a bitter pill to swallow, having reached their first major final on foreign soil. However, Gareth Southgate’s squad can hold their heads high after a valiant performance throughout the tournament, with the emergence of young talents such as Jude Bellingham and Kobbie Mainoo offering hope for the future.
