Rabat – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) identified Israel’s presence in occupied Palestine as unlawful.
The court said in an opinion today that Israel is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as rapidly as possible.
“The State of Israel is under an obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activities, and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the court added.
The court also called on Israeli occupation forces to make reparation for the damage caused to all the natural or legal persons concerned in the Occupied territories.
“All States are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the court added.
The Palestinian Presidency welcomed the ruling, describing the court’s announcement as a triumph for justice.
The presidency further urged the international community to compel Israel to fully and immediately end its occupation, emphasizing that the ICJ ruling renews hope among Palestinians.
“The Presidency reiterated the necessity to end the policy of impunity, which allowed Israel to deny our Palestinian people’s right to self-determination for over 76 years, perpetrate policies of apartheid, persecution, and commit genocide now being exposed to the world in Gaza and throughout the occupied Palestinian territories,” Palestinian news agency Wafa quoted the president’s office as saying.
The court’s opinion comes as Israel continues its devastating war on civilians across Gaza.
More than 38,000 Palestinians have perished, while 88,000 others were injured during the ongoing massacre since October 7.
