Rabat – In the opening Paris 2024 Olympic match, Argentina salvaged a 2-2 draw against Morocco with a goal deep into added time, amid vehement protests over the referee’s decision to extend play by a staggering 15 minutes.
However, according to BeINSport sources, the match has not officially ended. They will resume the match with additional three minutes of play without the presence of an audience.
The match, which saw emotions running high on both sides, has sparked widespread debate and accusations of unfair officiating.
The large amount of added time, which resulted in Argentina securing an equalizer in the 106th minute, has many fans wondering about the fairness of the call, feeling sympathy for Morocco’s side.
The controversy erupted online as spectators and football enthusiasts alike took to social media platforms to express their disbelief and frustration.
One X user exclaimed, “15 MINUTES???!!! This is the most rigged thing ever. How is that even possible? There was nothing, should have been maximum 5 minutes.”
His sentiments were echoed by many who felt that such a lengthy addition of time was unprecedented and unjustified towards the Moroccan team.
Another user on X, voiced his indignation, “Argentina just got gifted 15 minutes of extra time vs Morocco for literally no reason and the referee didn’t whistle until they got one final chance and of course they score to equalize. Even in Olympics, they cheat.”
On the same sentiment, another X user added fuel to the fire, stating, “15 added mins? Argentina getting it easy everywhere…I’m sorry for the Morocco fans and the players.”
Also siding with Morocco, another critical voice in the debate lamented, “15 minutes of additional time, what an absolute shame of referring in this match, these Swedish referees for Argentina-Morocco are a disaster.”
Joueurs Marocains on X also expressed their frustration, calling the added minutes “a theft.”
The last-minute shot by Cristian Medina brought widespread celebration for Argentina fans. However, this has been overshadowed by the contentious circumstances surrounding the added time allocation.
Fans wait on the edges of their seats now to find the outcome after the added 3 minutes of playing time.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA, the governing bodies of the Olympics and football respectively, have yet to issue official statements regarding the incident. However, calls for an investigation into the handling of the match are likely to grow louder in the coming days.
