Marrakech – Police in Marrakech arrested a man on Thursday evening, August 15, after he struck several people with his vehicle on public streets while driving under the influence of alcohol, as shown in a video that has gone viral on social media.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the suspect was arrested for his involvement in dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a hit-and-run accident resulting in bodily injuries.
During the incident, he injured motorcyclists and pedestrians with wounds of varying severity.
Local media reported that the suspect is a 38-year-old French citizen of Moroccan origin. He was driving an Audi with foreign license plates when the incident occurred around 10 p.m.
Witnesses described the man as being in a state of hysteria as he hit a number of citizens with his luxury car before attempting to flee the scene.
After a dramatic chase, police were able to apprehend him. He was found to be heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
Three motorcyclists and two pedestrians suffered injuries of varying severity when they were struck by the suspect’s vehicle.
Bystanders had surrounded the car following the collisions, allowing police to quickly intervene and take the driver into custody.
The suspect is being held in police custody pending a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Authorities will determine the criminal acts attributed to him related to the dangerous driving and hit-and-run incident.
