Chad Officially Opens Consulate in Morocco’s Dakhla

Rabat – The Republic of Chad opened a consulate in Morocco’s Dakhla today. The opening reflects the country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.

Abderaman Koulamallah, Chad’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs chaired the consulate’s inauguration ceremony along with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.

The opening of the Chadian consulate mirrors the country’s position supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity.

During the ceremony, both ministers emphasized that the opening of the consulate also reflects the quality and strength of the relations between Morocco and Chad, characterized by deep historical ties.

With this opening, the number of consulates in Morocco’s southern provinces has reached 29, with Dakhla hosting 17 representations.

The opening of the consulate is part of Koulamallah’s official visit to Morocco.

In September 2022, Chad informed Morocco that it seeks to open its general consulate in Dakhla.

“The decision of this brotherly African country confirms and reflects the quality of bilateral ties through its support for the sovereignty of the Kingdom over its Sahara, its territorial integrity, and its national unity,” the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated following Chad’s announcement.

The opening of the consulate comes amid growing momentum towards Morocco’s position, bolstered by increasing recognition within the international community.

This development further boasts Morocco’s diplomatic efforts.

The North African country frequently celebrates this momentum, stressing how similar decisions confirm the international community’s clear support for Morocco’s society over its southern provinces.

In August 2022, King Mohammed VI said in a speech that “nearly thirty countries have opened consulates in our southern provinces, thereby confirming their clear support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and the Moroccanness of the Sahara.”

The monarch then launched a call, appealing to Morocco’s long-standing as well as new partners of the Kingdom whose positions on the Sahara dispute are “ambiguous” to clarify their stances.

“I would like to send out a clear message to everyone: the Sahara issue is the lens through which Morocco looks at the world,” the King added.
