Rabat – Morocco secured today a decisive 4-0 victory against the United States in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics’s football tournament.
The clash marked Morocco’s first ever knockout game victory in the Olympics, advancing them to the semifinals where they will face either Japan or Spain.
Morocco’s effective play and strategic goals proved too much for the American side, marking a commanding advancement for the Atlas Lions to the tournament’s semifinals.
The game began with high hopes for the US team, which was looking to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2000.
However, Morocco proved to be a formidable opponent and quickly gained the upper hand. Early in the match, Morocco’s pressure led to a penalty, which was successfully converted by Soufiane Rahimi, giving the Moroccan Lions a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the game.
Despite some solid plays and chances from the US, including a strong save by goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, they struggled to break through Morocco’s strong defense.
In the second half of the game, Morocco’s Ilias Akhomach scored a goal in the 62nd minute, doubling his team’s lead. The goal was confirmed after a brief VAR check.
The US team showed moments of promise, with players like Robinson and Aaronson creating opportunities, but they were unable to convert these into goals.
The Moroccan captain, Achraf Hakimi, capped off an exceptional performance with a stunning goal in the 69th minute.
Hakimi picked up the ball in midfield, evaded US defenders, and scored with a calm shot into the corner of the net. His goal effectively shattered any hopes of a US comeback.
The game was further sealed when substitute El Mehdi Maouhoub stepped up in added time to smash a penalty kick.
