Rabat – Sofyan Amrabat, the Moroccan international midfielder currently with Italian club Fiorentina, has secured a move to Turkish side Fenerbahçe on a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy. The transfer was confirmed by both clubs on Saturday.
“ACF Fiorentina announces that it has transferred, on a temporary basis with an obligation to buy, the rights to the services of player Sofyan Amrabat to Fenerbahçe SK,” the Italian club said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Turkish club said on X, “We wish our new player a career filled with championships wearing the yellow and blue stripes.”
Amrabat, who has earned 57 caps for Morocco, spent last season on loan at Manchester United, where he appeared in 30 matches. At 28 years old, he will now be joining Fenerbahçe, where he will be reunited with another Moroccan player, Youssef En-Nesyri.
En-Nesyri, who joined Fenerbahçe from Sevilla FC at the end of July, will be a key teammate for Amrabat in Istanbul.
As they aim to end their longest championship drought since 2014, Fenerbahçe sees Amrabat as a crucial addition to their squad. The loan agreement is part of the club’s strategy to strengthen their team for the upcoming season.
Amrabat is a highly regarded defensive midfielder known for his tenacity, work rate, and tactical intelligence. His performances, particularly with the Moroccan national team during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, significantly enhanced his reputation.
He played a crucial role in Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals. As a defensive midfielder, he was key in both breaking up opposition attacks and facilitating transitions from defense to attack.
His performance was particularly notable in Morocco’s matches against Spain and Portugal. Against Spain in the Round of 16, he played a key role in a resolute defensive display that saw Morocco progress to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-final match against Portugal, his presence in midfield was instrumental in Morocco’s 1-0 victory.
