Rabat – Morocco’s government announced today the launch of a rehabilitation program for areas that were affected by the recent devastating floods.
A press release from the Head of Government’s office said that the overall projected budget allocated for the program is set at approximately MAD 2.5 billion ($258.69 million).
In accordance with royal instructions, the program is designed to rehabilitate the regions affected by the floods that caused severe humanitarian and infrastructural damage.
The statement further noted that the provinces concerned include Errachidia, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Zagora, Figuig, Jerada, Taroudant, Tata, Tiznit, Gulemim, and Assa Zag.
“The government has mobilized all human and logistical resources to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of the affected population, involving various relevant ministerial departments to ensure the proper implementation of this ambitious program,” the statement added.
Floods in these regions resulted in the death of at least 18 victims, with most of the fatalities being reported in Tata.
Recent floods hitting the city last weekend also swept away a bus, in which five people were killed, while 13 people were rescued.
Eleven other victims remain missing.
As part of the government program, support and assistance will be established for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged buildings and homes, as well as road infrastructure and networks for telecommunications, electricity distribution, drinking water, and sanitation.
The program also seeks to support agricultural activities in the affected areas, particularly through the restoration of small and medium hydraulic works as well as assistance to farmers who lost their livestock due to the floods.
