Rabat – The Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) has chosen the city of Marrakech to host the 19th World Congress in 2026.
OWHC announced its decision on Wednesday following a vote by the organization’s members, who are meeting in congress until Friday in Cordoba, southern Spain, the current host of the 18th World Congress.
Marrakech outperformed Portuguese city of Angra do Heroismo during the vote.
The current edition brings together about 75 cities and 34 mayos from around the world.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, Marrakech positioned itself as a favorite spot not only for tourists and visitors but also for organizations that selected the red-washed city to host prestigious events.
The Organization of World Heritage Cities was officially established in 1993 in Fez to serve as a network for sharing experience and best practices in the urban management of listed sites, representing over 200 cities with at least one UNESCO World Heritage site.
The organization serves as a platform for exchanges, bringing together policymakers and professionals dedicated to preserving historic cities, especially those listed on the World Heritage list, MAP reported today.
During the congress, each member city is represented by its mayor, with also the participation of local elected officials and heritage managers.
The event further boosts Marrakech’s reputation as a destination for hosting events and is likely to enhance the city’s tourism potential.
Data from the National Airports Office (ONDA) said thi week that the Marrakech-Menara welcomed 740,479 passengers last month.
The number is against the 554,129 arrivals recorded in August 2023.
