Rabat — Morocco has solidified its position as a leading African nation in terms of quality of life, coming in 2nd place on the continent, according to the recently released “Best Countries Rankings 2024” by US News & World Report.
The rankings, assess countries based on various factors including quality of life, economic strength, cultural influence, and entrepreneurship. Globally, Morocco secured a respectable 39th rank with a score of 31.9 out of 100.
To compile the rankings, USNews & World Report conducted a comprehensive survey involving over 17,000 individuals worldwide. The survey spanned nearly three months and gathered data on diverse perceptions of countries across different dimensions.
Egypt topped the African rankings, claiming the 35th position globally. South Africa followed closely behind, rounding out the African podium at the 40th rank.
“Morocco is renowned for its cuisine, which is admired and imitated around the world. The country’s chefs make abundant use of spices and local ingredients such as saffron, mint, and olives. Couscous is Morocco’s staple dish, and skewers, soups, and salads are often served,” wrote the American magazine.
However, “despite Morocco’s economic progress, high unemployment, poverty, and illiteracy continue to affect the country,” the publication laments, highlighting that “human rights groups have expressed concerns about ongoing restrictions on freedom of expression.”
This year’s ranking, covering 89 countries, evaluates how nations are perceived globally based on several criteria. These include key factors like access to food, housing, quality education, healthcare, and employment. The ranking also considers aspects such as security, political stability, and individual freedoms.
This is not the first time Morocco has secured a high ranking for quality of life in Africa.
In a 2023 report by US News, Morocco led the continent and ranked 52nd globally with a score of 12.7 out of 100. The country scored particularly well in areas like affordability and safety but earned lower ratings for income equality, public education, and healthcare systems.
