Rabat — Spanish media highlighted Morocco’s deployment of security units to tackle the mass irregular migration attempts from northern Moroccan cities.
Spanish news outlet El Pais said on Sunday that a massive deployment of Moroccan securities services “prevented hundreds of migrants from breaching the border fence with Ceuta on multiple occasions.”
The news outlet recalled the viral campaign circulating online, in which some users have been encouraging youth to engage in an irregular migration attempt on September 15.
“Since Friday Morocco has sent an unprecedented contingent of Gendarmerie and other security bodies to the coastal town of Fnideq (Castillejos), adjacent to Ceuta, including hundreds of agents, vehicles and eight boats;” the news outlet said, noting that two attempts to scale the fence occurred.
Canal Sur, another Spanish news outlet, emphasized that police presence prevents the entry of several hundred migrants.
The news outlet further quoted the Spanish Minister of the Interior, praising Morocco’s cooperation and efforts along the entire border perimeter.
Several videos circulating online documented the mass migration attempts by both Moroccans and sub-Saharan migrants.
The videos also documented vandalism and youth throwing stones at police and security vehicles.
Beyond Spanish media, Morocco’s security approach made headlines worldwide.
BFM TV said Moroccan security services repelled hundreds of irregular migration candidates, including both Moroccans and nationals from other African countries.
“A significant security services had been deployed in Fnideq over the weekend following social media calls to reach Ceuta,” the news outlet said.
