An official source from Morocco’s Ministry of Health has reassured Moroccans and residents amid global panic over mpox, stressing that the country’s epidemiological situation is not a cause for concern.
Mouad El Mrabet, the coordinator of the health emergency at the ministry, made the reassuring comments today in the wake of concerning reports after Morocco on Thursday detected its first monkeypox case in months.
“The recorded case is not a cause for concern,” the health expert told SNRTNews, noting that the health ministry put all people who had contact with the patient in quarantine.
He also reassured citizens of the rapid and effective monitoring system in Morocco, which contributed to the detection of cases.
Morocco had previously detected five cases in 2022, which were dealt with according to an approved treatment protocol recommended by the World Health organization.
El Mrabet stressed that the scientific committee in charge of monkeypox detections in Morocco can hold frequent meetings to assess the country’s epidemiological state and closely follow developments of the situation.
On Thursday, the Health Ministry said that the country’s first case in the current mpox infection cycle was reported in Marrakech.
“The patient is receiving appropriate medical care according to established health procedures and is under close medical observation to ensure stability,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry stressed that it will continue to communicate with the national public and provide regular updates, urging citizens to only rely on official sources to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.
