Rabat – Moroccan players Yassine Bounou and Sofyan Amrabat are one of several football stars featured in the newly announced eight-part TV series “We Were There”, produced by Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and FIFA.
The series, which delves into human stories behind the World Cup Qatar 2022, has officially been released to the public, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
Narrated by Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley, the documentary is set to offer viewers an inside look into the lives of players and fans who were part of the historic tournament. Each episode is a “mini documentary with a multi-layered narrative which establishes the backstory of the lead characters and discovers their unique journey to Qatar,” the report said.
Among the notable participants are members of the World Cup-winning Argentina team, including coach Lionel Scaloni and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, alongside other stars like France’s Didier Deschamps and Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes.
Morocco’s Bounou and Amrabat, who greatly contributed to the country’s movie-like World Cup run, also share their unique insights. The 2022 World Cup saw Morocco become the first African and Arab country to reach the tournament’s semifinals.
The Atlas Lions entered the tournament as underdogs, but managed to defy all odds and beat some of the strongest football teams, including Portugal, Spain, and Belgium.
Executive Director of Communications and Media at SC, Fatma Al Nuaimi, highlighted the pride Qatar took in hosting such a momentous event, stating that the series offers fans an opportunity to relive the tournament through a personal lens.
“We hope it brings back some great memories for everyone who enjoyed the tournament,” Al Nuaimi said.
In addition to its focus on players, “We Were There” includes fan stories, such as that of a Saudi supporter who walked across the desert to witness his team’s victory over Argentina.
