Rabat – Five regions in Morocco recorded a per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeding the national average of MAD 36,284  (approximately $3,587) in 2022, according to the latest report from the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

Leading the list is Dakhla-Oued Eddahab in Morocco’s souther provinces, with a remarkable GDP per capita of MAD 80,996 (approximately $7,668), followed by Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra at MAD 71,246 (approximately $ 6,739).

Casablanca-Settat, the country’s economic powerhouse, recorded MAD 54,997 (approximately $5,217), while Guelmim-Oued Noun and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra registered MAD 44,432  (approximately $4,212) and MAD 43,124 (approximately $4,085), respectively.

The report highlighted the wide regional disparities in GDP per capita across Morocco. For instance, in regions such as Marrakech-Safi, GDP per capita stood at MAD 22,730 (approximately $2,145), significantly below the national average.

Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima performed slightly better with MAD 35,641 (approximately $3,378). However, the overall dispersion of GDP per capita across regions showed a slight improvement, with the average absolute gap narrowing marginally from MAD 14,617  (approximately $1,388)in 2021 to MAD 14,552 (approximately $1,383) in 2022.

The HCP also provided insights into household final consumption expenditure (HFCE) on a regional basis, revealing that four regions—Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, and Fès-Meknès—together accounted for nearly two-thirds (62.9%) of the national HFCE, which reached MAD 816 billion (approximately $76 billion).

Casablanca-Settat led with 25.3% of the expenditure, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra with 14.7%, and both Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Fès-Meknès each contributing 11.5%.

Meanwhile, Marrakech-Safi (11.3%), Souss-Massa (7.2%), and the Oriental region (7%) made up almost a quarter of the HFCE.

The remaining five regions collectively contributed 11.7%, with Dakhla-Oued Eddahab at the lower end with 0.7% and Béni Mellal-Khénifra at 5.4%.
