Rabat – The General Directorate of Meteorology said today that thunderstorms will hit several provinces across Morocco today.
Thunderstorms producing 15 to 25 millimeters of rainfall will hit several provinces until 11 p.m. today.
The provinces concerned include Midelt, Ifrane, Beni Mellal and Al Haouz.
The same weather is expected to concern Tinghir Azilal, Khenifra, and Boulemane.
Morocco’s weather office issued a similar weather alert on Monday, forecasting rain in Azilal, Tinghir and Al Haouz, in addition to Ouarzazate.
The Al Haouz province is the main area that was hit by a devastating earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023. The natural disaster left over 3,000 dead and injured 5,600 others.
Due to the earthquake, many were left homeless, forcibly displaced to tents mobilized by the government as shelters.
As the weather in the region starts to exhibit increased rainfall and lower temperatures, many have expressed concerns that the residents of Al Haouz are especially vulnerable, as the reconstruction of the region is still ongoing.
Recently, Hamid Abdellah, president of Anmoun Amsguine, a local organization in the village of Amsguine, said in an interview with The New Humanitarian that, “We understand everyone is focused on Gaza right now, but people have largely forgotten what happened to us.”
On Monday, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch chaired a meeting to discuss the reconstruction program for areas affected by the earthquake.
During the meeting, Akhannouch said that King Mohammed VI’s instructions enabled the country to respond quickly and effectively to the impacts of the quake.
The committee in charge of the reconstruction work also pledged that its government has established all necessary conditions to facilitate the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged homes.
It also reported the issuance of 55,142 reconstruction permits and progress on reconstruction and rehabilitation projects for 49,632 damaged homes.
