Rabat – Algerian authorities have arrested two Moroccan nationals and an Algerian student, accusing them of espionage and threatening state security.
The arrests took place earlier this week in Oran and Sidi Bel Abbès, with the suspects alleged to be acting on behalf of a foreign power to undermine Algeria’s national interests.
The Moroccan workers, whose identities have not been disclosed, face serious charges, including espionage and acts against national unity.
Meanwhile, the Algerian student is accused of spreading false information and using various online platforms to establish a terrorist network. This incident marks a troubling chapter in the ongoing diplomatic rift between the two North African neighbors.
Algerian media reported that these arrests are part of a broader campaign by Algiers against what it perceives as external threats to its sovereignty.

The recent tensions have been exacerbated by Algeria’s accusations that Morocco is exploiting a visa exemption policy to deploy “Zionist intelligence agents” within its borders.
This first emerged from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it has contributed to a chilling atmosphere of suspicion and hostility between the two nations.
In response to these concerns, the Algerian government reinstated a visa regime for Moroccan nationals less than a month ago, tightening border controls to counter what it describes as “Zionist espionage.”
While accusations of espionage are serious, the underlying motivations appear to be rooted in Algeria’s long-standing animosity toward its western neighbor.
Algeria’s heavy-handed approach to what it perceives as threats from Morocco only serves to exacerbate tensions and foster an atmosphere of mistrust.
These arrests reflect a more general trend of escalating tensions, with Algeria frequently making accusations that only serve to undermine regional stability. These actions raise concerns not only for Moroccan citizens working in Algeria, but also for the potential repercussions on bilateral relations.
Moroccan nationals now find themselves increasingly scrutinized in Algeria, a situation that appears to be a direct result of the recent Moroccan diplomatic gains on the Western Sahara issue rather than any tangible threat posed by individual workers.
The deterioration of relations can then be largely attributed to Algeria’s assertive posture, which seeks to blame Morocco for its own insecurities rather than addressing underlying issues.
