Rabat– The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) has announced the launch of the first direct flight linking Morocco to Iceland, to be operated by the low-cost carrier Play Airlines.

In an official statement, ONMT revealed that this new route will establish a regular connection between Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, and Marrakech, with two weekly flights. The service is set to commence today, October 17.

This development marks the first direct air link between the two countries, introduced as part of a strategic agreement between ONMT and Play Airlines. Alongside the new flights, the agreement includes joint promotional and communication campaigns aimed at attracting travelers from both Iceland and North America.

Play Airlines’ extensive network is expected to strengthen Morocco’s connectivity with North America through Reykjavik, which serves as a key hub linking Scandinavian countries, Western Europe, and North America. The airline currently operates out of five major North American airports: New York, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto.

ONMT emphasized that Iceland is a strategic market for Morocco. To bolster tourism from the region, the agency has previously launched several promotional campaigns, including the “Light Tour” from May 27 to 30, 2024, which took place in four Scandinavian capitals and attracted over 150 key players in Scandinavian tourism.

In addition, ONMT has successfully increased transportation capacity to Scandinavian countries in 2024 through partnerships with leading airlines in Western Europe, further enhancing Morocco’s tourism prospects in the region.
