Rabat – Morocco has taken another major leap in its renewable energy ambitions with the launch of the Jbel Lahdid wind farm in Essaouira.
Launched by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), the new Jbel Lahdid wind farm adds 270 megawatts (MW) to Morocco’s renewable energy capacity, helping reinforce the nation’s energy independence.
It spans three ridges and features 54 turbines, each with a capacity of 5 MW. Many turbines’ pieces were manufactured locally.
The wind farm was established through a public-private partnership (PPP) between Nareva Holding and Enel Green Power, representing a total investment of approximately MAD 3.25 billion ($320 million).
This facility is to become a pillar of Morocco’s visionary renewable energy strategy, which now totals 5,440 MW, with wind energy accounting for 2,400 MW, or 45% of the country’s electricity production. These developments align with Morocco’s ambitious objective of reaching 52% renewable sources in its energy mix by 2030.

“The operationalization of the Jbel Lahdid wind farm not only reinforces Morocco’s energy sovereignty but also represents a decisive move in the nation’s fight against climate change. The country is on track to meet its renewable energy targets well ahead of schedule,” The Director General of ONEE, Tarik Hamane said.
The facility is projected to generate 952 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually, enough to meet the electricity needs of a city with 1.2 million residents, such as Marrakech, Fez, or Tangier, while also reducing CO2 emissions by 580,000 tons each year.
In addition to its environmental advantages, the wind farm has already positively impacted the local economy, creating over 500 direct jobs and facilitating the construction of 74 kilometers of new roads that connect 14 rural communities.
Morocco is also aiming to position itself as a notable player in the green hydrogen sector as part of its sustainable energy agenda. In March, the Moroccan government outlined plans for the “Morocco Offer” project, which focuses on developing the country’s green hydrogen industry.
This initiative is expected to be crucial for the country’s energy transition and sustainable development, with green hydrogen serving as a key energy vector. As Morocco addresses challenges related to technology, the environment, social issues, and economic growth, the emergence of a growing renewable energy industry could represent a new era for the nation.
