German authorities recently arrested Abdel Hamid, a 33-year-old self-proclaimed Moroccan preacher popular on TikTok, the BBC reported.
Known for engaging young audiences on religious and secular issues, Hamid claimed to be raising funds for mosques and helping pilgrims.
However, investigations revealed that he diverted significant donations to luxury items, including Rolex watches and Mercedes cars, leading to charges of fraud.
If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of 1 to 10 years,” BBC said on Wednesday.
Times Algebra identified Abdelhamid as a “well known German Islamic preacher,” who “cheated his followers out of hundreds of thousands of Euros.”
“He collected donations online. He claimed the money was for pilgrims traveling to Mecca,”” the news outlet said on X, adding that the alleged preacher “lived a high life with the money he had collected.”
The news made headlines on social media. Commenters on X reshared the news, saying the preacher used years of donation money to buy “five Rolex watches.”
One commenter said, “This boy really smart.”
