Rabat — French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have been confirmed to conduct a state visit to Morocco from October 28-30, according to the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery.
The visit, at the invitation of King Mohammed VI, aims to reinforce the strong bilateral relations between France and Morocco.
“The visit reflects the depth of bilateral relations, based on a strong and solid partnership, thanks to the mutual desire of the leaders of both countries to strengthen the multifaceted ties that bind them,” the statement concluded.
In September, the Elysee confirmed Macron will visit Morocco at the end of October. The Moroccan monarch sent President Macron a letter in which he expressed his satisfaction with the “promising horizons that are emerging for our two countries,” extending his invitation to the French president.
The news comes in the wake of intense efforts of both countries to boost their bilateral ties — particularly after France’s decision to fully recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Macron announced his country’s new Sahara position in July, saying that Paris’ new policy foundationally believes that “The present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
The French president further emphasized that his country’s position remains consistent and unwavering, aligning with the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007.
During this upcoming visit, France and Morocco are reportedly planning to strengthen cooperation agreements at all levels, including military.
Earlier this month, La Tribune reported that Morocco may potentially agree on purchasing 12 to 18 Caracal helicopters from Airbus Helicopters company during Macron’s visit.
The deal is estimated between €600 and €800 million, the report detailed.
“If successful, the counteract would benefit French industries, including Safran Helicopter Engines, based in Marignane and Borders,” La Tribune added.
