Rabat – The Moroccan National Railway Authority (ONCF) has awarded a new contract to the consortium of Spanish engineering firm Ineco and local company CID to undertake the preliminary project for the railway service connecting Oued Zem and Beni Mellal.
This is the third contract secured by the consortium in Morocco this year, with the total value of new contracts in the country reaching €2.275 million in 2024, Ineco said in a press release.
The project falls within Morocco’s 2040 Railway Strategy, which aims to significantly enhance the country’s rail infrastructure. The new development includes the widening and rectification of approximately 40 kilometers of track between Khouribga and Oued Zem.
It also includes the elimination of level crossings on 120 kilometers of rail between Sidi el Aidi and Oued Zem, as well as the development of a new railway route spanning 60 kilometers between Oued Zem and Beni Mellal.
These upgrades aim to improve the efficiency and safety of Morocco’s railway services, particularly in the central regions.
Under its long-term railway strategy, Morocco plans to expand its high-speed rail network from the current 320 kilometers to over 1,280 kilometers by 2040.
Once completed, it is projected that 87% of the population will have access to the upgraded network, up from 51% today. The expanded rail network will also integrate key infrastructure, including 12 ports and 15 international airports.
Last month, ONCF announced a MAD 9.78 billion investment plan for the 2025-2027 period as part of its expansion strategy. The program will focus on acquiring new rolling stock, constructing maintenance workshops, and maintaining existing infrastructure.
The broader plan includes extending the high-speed rail line (LGV) from Kenitra to Marrakech and establishing a regional express network (RER) for the Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech metropolitan areas.
