Fez Art Gathering Urges Collective Responsibility to Tackle Water, Climate Issues

The 7th annual Fez Gathering, a premier cultural event in Morocco organized by Spark Collective, hosted today a thought-provoking art installation themed “Drops,” drawing critical attention to the country’s escalating water crisis.

In the enchanting setting of Jnan Sbil garden, the event’s illustrious guests engaged participants with a poignant narrative, inviting them to reflect on the intricate relationship between water and human emotion.

As Morocco faces significant water scarcity challenges, exacerbated by climate change and growing demand, organizers of the Fez Gathering see the event as a vital platform for dialogue and awareness raising on critical social issues.

Bringing together artists, thinkers, and activists, this year’s festival emphasized the urgent need for water conservation and sought to foster further discussion about sustainable practices. The Gathering’s primary aim is to inspire collective action, the organizers insisted in a press statement, arguing that art can be a powerful medium for social change and environmental advocacy.

The choice of this year’s theme, “Drops” was inspired by the urgency to evoke the immense impact the sustained convergence of seemingly insignificant choices or behavior can have in transforming the very fabric of life as it is lived today, especially when it comes to climate and water preservation.

“We wanted to explore the contradictions and duality of water,” Krystal Siemens, creative director of Spark Collective, told Morocco World News on the sidelines of today’s Gathering, providing a potent reminder of the emotional weight surrounding water scarcity.

The collaborative effort of five creative professionals—including an architect, a designer, a sound and light specialist, and a videographer—brought this immersive experience to life at today’s event. The collective’s interdisciplinary approach exemplifies how diverse expertise can enhance artistic expression and engage visitors on multiple sensory levels.

As the festival continues, it attracts artists and participants from around the globe, reinforcing its position as Morocco’s premier cultural event. The focus on water conservation in this year’s gathering underscores the urgency of global discussions regarding water resources, noted the organizers’ statement. This emphasis is particularly timely, reflecting the critical need for awareness and action in the face of an escalating crisis, it stressed.

“Creating something dynamic and beautiful in Fez for everyone to enjoy is a wonderful experience,” Siemens shared, emphasizing how the festival fosters diverse perspectives on contemporary issues through art.
