Rabat – The Moroccan government is maintaining its support for the media sector, recognizing its vital role as the “fourth estate” in society.
In a session at the House of Councillors today, Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, discussed the government’s ongoing efforts to support the press, particularly in the wake of the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bensaid noted that the government has prioritized assisting the media sector, which faced significant financial strain during the crisis when many outlets were at risk of bankruptcy.
To address this, the government introduced direct financial support to help media organizations survive and continue their vital role in communication, political transparency, and strengthening democracy.
As Bensaid mentioned, the support is crucial in allowing the press to continue its mission of informing citizens about the actions of political figures and providing feedback, which plays a key role in strengthening democracy.
He confirmed that this direct financial aid is ongoing and will be extended until March 2025, allowing media organizations time to submit their applications under a new decree that will offer support in a revised manner.
Beyond financial assistance, Bensaid stressed that the government aims to organize the sector, noting, “The idea is not just to give financial support to the press, but to organize it as well.”
The minister also announced that the government has increased its support for the press sector, particularly with the rise in the number of media organizations.
He outlined plans to boost investment and strengthen the presence of Moroccan media both locally and internationally, including by encouraging international media groups to establish offices in the country.
These initiatives strive to ensure the long-term sustainability of the media sector, enhance its influence, and elevate Morocco’s media presence on the global stage.
