Rabat – Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable fisheries and marine conservation as it chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) from November 4 to 8 at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome.
The GFCM, which includes 22 member nations and the European Union, works to ensure responsible fisheries practices in these sensitive regions.
In a testament to its regional leadership, Morocco also received the GFCM Compliance Award for the fourth consecutive year, recognizing its rigorous adherence to sustainable fishing practices.
The Kingdom was represented by a strong delegation, including officials from the Maritime Fisheries Administration, the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH), the National Fisheries Office (ONP), and the National Agency for Aquaculture Development (ANDA).
This collective participation underscored Morocco’s dedication to effective fisheries management and regional collaboration.
Under Morocco’s chairmanship, the committee focused on recommendations for sustaining fish stocks, conserving marine habitats, and promoting eco-friendly fishing methods.
These measures aim to advance responsible fisheries management across the Mediterranean, according to Morocco’s delegation.
In receiving the GFCM Compliance Award, Morocco was recognized for its consistent commitment to the Commission’s guidelines, marking it as a regional model for responsible fisheries governance.
The award reflects Morocco’s transparency, strong oversight, and alignment with international standards in its fisheries sector.
The 47th session of the GFCM discussed key issues impacting the Mediterranean and Black Sea, such as the preservation of marine ecosystems, fisheries management, and the expansion of sustainable aquaculture practices.
